However, it finally changed. Boston was appointed knight on Tuesday to end the expectation of sport for such an honor. The 90 -year -old is not only one of the biggest players in the rugby league, but one of the pioneering black figures in the history of British sport.
Boston was born in Cardiff but his rugby opportunities were limited. This led him to sign for Wigan in 1953, where he stayed until 1968, establishing a certain number of astonishing records along the way in a sparkling career. In 488 games, he scored 478 tests, standing up as the club’s first scorer with a record that will surely never be broken. He was also a member of the winning team of the 1960 Great Britain World Cup, playing for his country 31 times.
His achievements threw the platform for more players from Wales to make the transition to the Union rugby league, with a statue at the center of Wigan immortalizing its importance for the history of the city. There is a statue similar to Cardiff de Boston and two other pioneers in Wales who played in the League, Clive Sullivan and Gus Risman.

Boston’s achievements were finally recognized on a national scene. It is a symbolic moment for the League as well as for Boston, the sport obtaining the honor that many think that it has had no deserved for decades.
